Pompeii was impressive! It is large and vast, and was a full blown city with all it's typcial city offices and dwellings and interworkings. They had plumbing and walkways and theatre and all the typical everyday life needs were met there. They had sports stadiums for gladiators and the children collected gladiator stats. They had fast food restaurants, artists, shops, and even beautiful glass dishes and glass works. They had large decorated beautiful homes. It was a very affluent area. While we were there we were told that archeologists have just discovered yet another city that is older and even larger that is also buried in the ash of Mount Vesuvias. Of interest, we learned that the people were used to the earthquakes and the mountains rumblings...They took no note, and didn't heed it as a warning and one day like others, the volcano made it's noises, only on this day, the Volcano blew up and buried them all. Now Naples which is a huge city not far from pompeii is ignoring Vesuvius....The growth of plant life over the ash is amazing....it's like fertilizer for them and they grow lush....Enjoyed our visit. It was very hot and very sobering...even though all their precious things may have survived, none of their lives did...when you see that, you cant help thinking of the Bible's warning for us today.
